A playwrights festival, a big Irish party and some good old-fashioned jazz — there is a lot happening on the arts and entertainment scene around the city.

CBC's Karen Moxley shares her picks for what to do this week in Calgary.

Jazz music

Jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller will be in Calgary this weekend to perform with Canadian saxophonist Fraser Calhoun.

Miller rarely makes tour stops in Canada and has toured with ensembles such as The Jazz Messengers, the Woody Shaw Quintet and the Mercer Ellington Orchestra. Tickets are $30 at the door.

Latin music

If Latin music is more your style, Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba is also in town this weekend.

The Juno winner performs in both Spanish and English and his music reflects Latin and African influences with a dash of funk. Tickets are $25 and if you miss him in Calgary Friday, you can catch the Smithers, B.C.-based artist in Canmore on Sunday.

Enbridge PlayRites

The Alberta Theatre Project's 27th annual new play festival is on this weekend. This year the festival features four new plays: Dust, The Apology, The Valley and The God that Comes. For more information on any of the shows, head to to the Alberta Theatre Project website. General admission tickets run for $40.

As well, CBC's Chris dela Torre is hosting Daybreak this weekend and will have an interview with The God that Comes collaborators Hawksley Workman and Christian Barry on Sunday between 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

St. Patrick's Day

Of course, there are many Irish-themed parties happening around the city this weekend including one tonight in Heritage Park that is sponsored by CBC.

Tonight's party is part of the 'notable night' series hosted by the CBC's Russell Bowers. The fun starts at 6 p.m. for cocktail hour, dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the concert, featuring local Irish band Cabot's Crossing, starts at 8 p.m. Tickets for the evening start at $60 plus tax.
