The man found guilty of murdering 37-year-old Calgary mother Corinne Belanger in 2001 addressed the court Monday and insisted he is innocent.

"I can feel the anger. But I stand here — I didn't do it. I'm not guilty," Brown told the court at his sentencing hearing.

Barry David Brown was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Brown compared himself to David Milgaard, who spent 21 years behind bars after being wrongfully convicted of murder in 1970.

"He's entitled to say whatever he wishes to say at the end of the day, but what I would say is that the jury came to a different conclusion," said Crown attorney Carla MacPhail.

The victim's mother, Lily Belanger, was surprised by Brown's comment.

"I was really angry when he said that and I was shocked that he would come up with something like that."

Police arrested Brown during a traffic stop in 2010 and charged him with second-degree murder, which was later upgraded to first-degree murder.

The Crown alleged that Brown shot the Calgary mother three times in her northeast home on behalf of Belanger's estranged common-law husband.

The couple had a son and Belanger was seeking sole custody of the boy.
