What started out as an ordinary day for Darrell Szczerba, ended in a way that will make his future days extraordinary.
On Tuesday, he, along with his wife Laurie, became Calgary’s newest millionaires.
On Friday, the two spoke for the first time publicly about their winnings.
Darrell says he was waiting for an appointment to get a tattoo in the community of Marda Loop when he decided to get a cold drink across the street.
He says he figured it was a good time to check his Lotto Max ticket from last Friday’s draw.
“So I checked the first one and won $20, and said, ‘We’ll that’s OK’ and then checked the second one and I couldn’t read the numbers…it was just zeros, so I thought I’d better check it (at the machine) and I went crazy,” Szczerba explained. “It was crazy, just didn’t believe it.”
He says he went home and waited for his wife to come back from shopping and getting her nails done.
“He said he won $30 million and told me that we could finally move if we wanted,” explained Laurie Szczerba. “I kept saying ‘Are you kidding, are you kidding’, and he wasn’t.”
The couple says they stayed home that night a had a couple of beers, and called family members. Soon after that Darrell quit his job in construction and Laurie quit hers as a legal assistant.
The two now say they’ll look at buying a new house, truck and spend some time travelling.
The jackpot marks the largest single lottery prize ever won in Calgary.
