If you're looking for some entertainment this weeekend in Calgary, the CBC's Chris dela Torre's picks include some pop and rock to celebrate a new music venue, some magic for the kids and a hit novel turned into a play.

National Music Centre Groundbreaker Shaker
After a bit of a delay, the funding is secure and ground was officially broken Friday for the 160,000 square-foot National Music Centre in the East Village.
The $150 million centre will boast the country's biggest collection of musical instruments and sound equipment, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Collection.
The building, designed by Oregon-based Allied Works Architecture in collaboration with Calgary firm Kasian Architecture, will incorporate the old King Eddy Hotel at Ninth Avenue and Fourth Street S.E. There will be performance spaces, recording studios and broadcast facilities.
To celebrate, there will be live music on Friday night courtesy of artists like The Bobby Kork Orchestra, Matt Masters and the local live-rock-show favourites, The HighKicks, which includes members of Calgary's own The Dudes.

Theatre season is quickly winding down, but you still have time to check out the current Theatre Calgary novel adaptation, The Kite Runner, a Canadian premeire.
It's sponsored by CBC Calgary and closes this weekend.

WowFest magic festival
Check out Calgary's first ever magic festival. WowFest is funded in part by a Calgary 2012 grant. It's a day's worth of family-friendly magic shows, sleight-of-hand tricks and Vegas-style stage shows.

And looking ahead to next week...Toronto songwriter and visual artist Sarah Slean is touring in support of her new double album, Land & Sea.
Slean plays Lethbridge on Tuesday, Canmore on Wednesday and the University Theatre at the U of C on Thursday, Feb. 28.
Tickets are $35 to $40 at the door or in advance at Ticketfly
