City and provincial officials announced a plan on Friday to team up in the battle against against marijuana grow-ops.

The province is assembling an expert panel to gather input on how to address the health and safety concerns and crime associated with marijuana grow-ops in Alberta communities.

“We are taking a stand against this illegal activity as we move toward creating a grow-op free Alberta,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General.

Since 2007 Calgary police have busted about 90 grow-ops per year in the city, officials said.

Calgary South-East MLA Rick Fraser will lead the panel as it conducts community and stakeholder consultations beginning this month. The process is expected to take until May.

Stakeholders to be consulted include police, fire and city officials, building investigators and real estate companies, among others.

“Discussions will focus on safety issues such as fire, electrical and structural hazards; remediation after a grow-op is dismantled, and health issues including chemical contamination and mold exposure,” the province said in a release.

Albertans are being invited to complete an online survey with their stories about grow-ops in their neighbourhood.

To increase awareness of the risks associated with marijuana grow-ops, the province also created an interactive marijuana grow-op house.
