The February long weekend is a busy one for an Alberta man who has managed to make a business out of the popular pastime of ice fishing.

Jarod Littlejohn rents ice fishing huts on Sylvan and Gull lakes in central Alberta. The Family Day long weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for his one-man company Adventure Ice Fishing Hut Rentals.

"I just thought I'd give it a go out here because nobody was doing it and it's something that I love to do and it gives me an excuse to be on the lake all the time," he said.

Despite his enthusiasm, Littlejohn says it is a lot of hard work, with the ice nearly a metre thick.

“I'm drilling some days up to 40 [or] 45 holes, so it can be a lot of physical work definitely," he said.

Littlejohn, who rents day and “overnighter” huts, tries to make each hut as comfortable as possible with a wood stove, perfectly drilled holes, and an underwater camera.

"If you're not catching a lot, at least you can see what you're not catching,” he said.
