Our mouths have been watering for good fish and chips this week, which has stirred up some online conversation about where the best fish and chips can be found in our landlocked city.

Fortunately good, fresh fish isn’t hard to find. Here are some of the best neighbourhood fish and chip joints serving up crispy, crunchy fish and freshly-cut fries — with a side of mushy peas, if you’re lucky.

The British Chippy

The British Chippy gets rave reviews for their traditional U.K.-style cod and haddock fish and chips, traditional mushy peas and Guinness and Boddingtons to wash it all down.

Owners Gary and Simone Hodgkinson came to Calgary from Manchester over a decade ago, bringing their family’s fish and chip knowledge with them. Gary’s parents, grandparents and great-grandparents all owned fish and chip shops in Wigan, England.

They’re open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Saturday, with a little break in the afternoons; if you’re after the real British deal, this is the place to get it.

Pelican Pier

In a quaint little space tucked away in a strip mall, Pelican Pier specializes in lightly battered fish and chips made with pollock, haddock, cod, halibut and salmon; of course there are also freshly-cut fries, home-made chowder, sauces and desserts.

Big Fish

Big Fish is a more upscale restaurant than most Calgary fish and chip shops, but it's still comfortably casual.

Along with fresh oysters, fish tacos and other seafood dishes, they serve up classic Wild Rose ale-battered fish and chips with slaw and house-made sauces.

Bonus: Big Fish seeks out sustainable seafood and is a member of Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise program.

Trawlers Seafood Kitchen

At Trawlers in the Beltline, they’re known for Alaskan halibut and handcut chips; also on offer haddock, cod, salmon, pollock, shrimp, scallops and calamari. They offer $4 off for pickups, and a family-sized meal that comes with 10 pieces of fish.

Billingsgate Seafood Market

Billingsgate Seafood Market in the Stadium Shopping Centre is more market than fish and chip shop, but their Lighthouse Cafe menu includes crispy cod or halibut and chips with tartar sauce and slaw; or go for shrimp, scallops or oysters and chips.

And while you’re there, pick up some fresh filets and a bag of batter mix to make your own at home.

Sea. Fish n' Chips

Sea. Fish n’ Chips in McKenzie Towne offers up crisp, lightly-battered halibut, haddock, and cod dinners with freshly-cut chips, home-made tartar sauce and slaw; there’s also the option of tiger prawns, scallops, oysters and calamari.

There is also Wild Rose beer and a few U.K. imports to drink too.

The Halibut House

The Halibut House occupies a little old building on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Edmonton Trail N.E. in Crescent Heights.

They serve halibut, of course, but also offer more inexpensive varieties of fish along with chips and the sides you’d expect to find.

Captain Scott’s Fish and Chips

Captain Scott’s Fish and Chips in Castleridge is not very well known, but those who do know it seem to like it.
