Two Calgary men are facing human trafficking and prostitution charges after an underage girl told police she was forced to work in the sex trade.
Police said two girls under 18 met the two men late last year. Over a period of several days, one of the teens was coerced into prostitution before she was able to flee to safety.
"She did have to escape after she was put into a particularly bad situation with sex trade customers," said Staff Sgt. Rob Rutledge.
In December the victim came forward to police.
According to police, most of these crimes took place in hotel rooms in the north end of the city.
Staff Sgt. Rutledge says that is not uncommon in Calgary.
"We get calls every week from hotels alerting us to prostitution that's taking place and we will go out and investigate. In this particular case we didn't get the calls and management staff may not have known what was taking place."
After a lengthy investigation, numerous charges were laid against the two men, including trafficking in persons, living on the avails of a prostitute under the age of 18 and forcible confinement.
Both men are in custody and will make their next court appearance on Feb. 8.
