Police in southern Alberta are investigating the suspicious disappearance of a Lethbridge man.

Police say Matthew Robillard, 25, hasn't been seen since Thursday morning when he left for work at a bank in Picture Butte, Alta.

His Honda Civic was found abandoned in Calgary in a northeast industrial park.

Friends and family have set up a Facebook group, that has more than 1,000 members so far. They're organizing searches in Lethbridge, with people in different parts of the province trying to find him, said friend Audrey Leavitt.

“We just started getting the word out last night, we have a pretty close-knit church, I just started sending messages on Facebook in our little church group and that grew pretty quick. He’s got family in Okotoks,” said Leavitt.

Private planes and a helicopter are also part of the search.

Staff Sgt. Ian Sanderson of the Lethbridge police says they need help to piece together what might have happened.

“We indicate suspicious circumstances based on the disappearance, the locating of the vehicle and different investigative details that we can’t release at this time, lead us to the point that this is an ongoing investigation of great seriousness and we’re inviting those tips to come our way so we can help satisfy the Robillard family,” said Sanderson.

“This is totally out of nature for him, he has simply disappeared off the face of the earth, if you will.”

Robillard is six feet tall, 200 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
