A 21-year-old man is in custody, after police say an apparent street racing stint led to a fatal car crash in northeast Calgary.

An unmarked police car spotted a Volkswagen Jetta and a Honda Accord speeding around 1:30 a.m. MT Sunday, say police.

Police stopped the Volkswagen but the Honda carried on.

That’s when police say the car slammed into a pole at the intersection of 68th Street and 26th Avenue N.E.

The passenger, a 24-year-old man, died instantly.

Three women in the back seat were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police arrested the driver at the scene and say he refused to give a breath sample. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
