As of 9 p.m. Friday, the city of Calgary had given out 757 parking tickets to motorists for leaving their cars on designated snow routes during a parking ban.

The city's snow route parking ban was put in place on Friday at 6 a.m. MT after Calgary got hit with a blast of winter weather.

That meant anyone parking on a snow route could receive a ticket and have their vehicle towed, including drivers who use the Car2go service. The fine for defying the parking ban is between $40 and $75 depending on when payment is made.

The manager of the city's parking authority, Miles Dyck, says while the number of tickets issued is high, it is not surprising.

"This has been about what we've experienced in the limited number of snow events that we've had in the past, so it's fairly close to what we've seen," said Dyck.

While crews continued to clean up the roads on Friday night, the city said it was possible the ban will remain in effect for 72 hours.

The city enacts the ban to help trucks and plows clear snow from streets.

City spokesperson Peter Jacoby says the roads department is trying its best.

"We had crews out in full force last night," he said. "We even called in some extra crews to make sure we were able to get the inbound routes cleared."

Police say there were very few collisions during the overnight period, but that changed as volume picked up during the morning rush — including a major collision on southbound Deerfoot Trail near Douglasdale Boulevard, which caused traffic delays.

Drivers are still being advised to be cautious on the roads.

The city has an iPhone app called City of Calgary Road Conditions that posts snow ban updates, or visit the city's website for more information.

ParkPlus zones are exempt from snow route parking bans from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
