Andy Warhol: The Athlete Series at MOCA
American artist Andy Warhol may be best known for turning the Campbell’s Soup can into an art icon. Warhol was also among the first artists to document the modern phenomenon of celebrity. In the late ‘70s, Warhol created a series of photographs and paintings of prominent athletes. The series includes Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a young Wayne Gretzky.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Calgary opens an exhibit of these photos Saturday and they will be on display for the next month. Admission is free, but it is necessary to RSVP through the museum’s website.
Runs until Jan. 30

A Canadian pop star returns to Calgary on Saturday night. Nelly Furtado’s music was all over commercial radio a decade ago and she became a pop music star around much of the world. But after motherhood and a Spanish-language album, she has had a lower profile in recent years. Furtado’s current tour is in support of her most recent recording The Spirit Indestructible.
