Calgary bylaw officers say more charges could be laid after a dog fight left one dog dead, and another in an animal hospital.

A man was walking three pit bulls on leashes at an Ogden off-leash dog park Monday when a fight broke out with two other dogs near a sports field.

One of those dogs, a Pomeranian, had to be put down while the other, a Great Pyrenees, is recovering at an animal hospital from serious injuries. Both were not wearing leashes.

The owner of one of the pit bulls involved has been charged with not having a licence and having a dog that caused death.

The man says he was dog sitting two of the three pit bulls.

But officials with Calgary's Animal and Bylaw Services say they are not ruling out charges against the owners of the other two dogs.

“There's been a charge laid for a dog causing death as well as [being] unlicensed — we're in the middle of our investigation. There could be possible further charges laid as that unravels.”

Anderson says in these kinds of situations emotions run high and many are quick to blame specific breeds. He says a dog’s temperament has much more to do with how the dog is treated.

“We would rather deal with the behaviour issues and the owner’s irresponsibility.”

The pit bulls have been taken to animal services to undergo a behavioural assessment. If officials deem the dogs "aggressive” then a judge must decide their fate.
