The Calgary Zoo says it won’t be going wild this New Year's, instead using special fireworks that should prove easier on the animals.

The zoo is planning to use low-impact, low-noise fireworks during its 12-minute end-of-the-year show, according to Roz Freeman, who organizes the zoo’s special events.

“[It] alleviates a lot of the pressure that gets put on our animal welfare because it is quite loud for some of the animals,” she said.

Freeman says traditional fireworks let off two loud bangs — one when fired from the ground, and the second when it explodes in the sky.

The low-noise fireworks don’t have that second bang.

Freeman says the zoo’s animal buildings are kept closed during the event.
