An Alberta mountain town located west of Calgary is using photo radar not just to ticket speeders, but to capture good driving behaviour and reward it with a gift certificate.

Beginning March in Canmore, licence plates of vehicles recorded by RCMP photo radar going under the speed limit will be entered in a draw. Every week, one driver will win a $250 gift certificate for a Canmore business of their choice.

Joanna McCallum, a town councillor, says it’s a good initiative.

“For the people that are actually obeying the law, and not speeding, this is an opportunity to reinforce that great behaviour,” McCallum said.

Canmore resident Andrew Ewan agrees.

“I think it's great to be actually not so scared of a policeman following you all the time, going 'Oh, what am I doing wrong?’ You could be caught for doing something right,” Ewan said.

The town estimates it will collect more than a $100,000 in photo radar fines next year and plans to use more than $10,000 of that money on the draw.

McCallum says she has seen similar programs in Europe, but says Canmore could be the first in this country to put one in place.
