A Calgary teacher has been charged with sexual assault after what police allege was a yearlong relationship with a 14-year-old boy.
Police allege the woman — who is in her 40s — was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student at the school where she works.
The woman's name is not being released and police are not revealing the name of the Calgary public school where she worked.
The suspect is charged with sexual interference with a child and sexual assault.
Staff Sgt. Kelly Campbell of the Child Abuse Unit said Wednesday afternoon that, regardless of the circumstances, these types of relationships are always classed as non-consensual.
“There is no consensual aspect to this relationship. The nature of these charges speak to that a youth cannot consent, she is in a position of authority. So, in the terms of the law, it cannot be consensual," said Campbell.
Calgary Board of Education spokesperson Richard Peter says the school board is devastated by the news. (CBC)The Calgary Board of Education confirmed the teacher involved is suspended with pay, as of Tuesday, until the charges are dealt with.
"We have over 12,000 employees who are committed to the safety of our students and even an allegation like this, the very idea of it, is devastating for all of us," said CBE spokesperson Richard Peter at a news conference Wednesday.
The organization's critical response team is supporting the school community where the teacher was working.
"In a circumstance like this, the primary concern of the CBE is the safety of students," the CBE said in a statement to the public.
The teacher has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 28.
Police say the relationship came to their attention after receiving information from a third party.
Investigators do not believe there are any other alleged victims related to this case.
