A man is in critical condition in Foothills hospital but is expected to survive after a three-vehicle crash in Calgary's northeast Saturday afternoon.

The driver was trapped inside his 2001 Volkswagen Jetta after it was T-boned by a 2002 Ford Explorer that ran a red light in the intersection of Madigan Drive and 52nd Street around 2 p.m. MT, according to police.

The 33-year-old man was crushed from the waist down and had to be extricated by the fire department.

He was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery.

After the first crash a third vehicle rear-ended the Explorer. The driver of that car fled the scene and pulled into a nearby parking lot.

Witnesses told police he tossed a bottle of liquor from his 1998 Nissan Altima. The 46-year-old man was later taken into custody by police and has been handed a driving suspension, 48-hour roadside suspension and charged with driving without insurance.

The 48-year-old female driver of the Ford Explorer was taken to hospital, and was under police escort while she was being treated for minor injuries.

Police said she failed a roadside breath test and has been charged with impaired driving, impaired driving causing bodily harm and refusing to provide a blood sample.

The intersection of Madigan Drive and 52nd Street northeast was temporarily closed to traffic for a large part of the afternoon.
