May and Joe, by Rosebud Theatre

If you're up for a road trip, you can always head to the hamlet of Rosebud, Alta. and check out its current theatre productions. May and Joe is a very Canadian and very musical updating of the story of Christmas; namely Joseph and Mary in a Jerusalem stable, giving birth to baby Jesus. This time around, it's May and Joe of Winnipeg who end up with a miracle child of their own.

Chrismoose Carol, by Loose Moose Theater

It's that time of year where there's many Scrooges on many local stages. Tonight, the long-running Loose Moose theatre house will debut this year's edition of its long-running Chrismoose Carol. But unlike most other productions of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, this one will have a particular theme. And as the Loose Moose tradition goes, you won't know what that theme is until you sit down in your seat.

Kid Koala's Space Cadet, at the National Music Centre

Montreal turntable master and graphic artist Kid Koala is back in Calgary to perform at Calgary's own National Music Centre. Last year, he wrote a graphic novel called Space Cadet and released it with an accompanying score. Next Thursday, he'll be performing his score for Space Cadet, using three turntables and a piano. The story will be told through live visual animation of the book and the audience will sit in what he's calling "inflatable space pods" — each hooked up to individual headphone systems. Ex-Beastie Boys DJ, Money Mark, will be opening the show. Tickets are $25 at the door or $20 in advance.
