Calgarian floods giant yard to offer public skating
Says public skating in city too expensive and crowded

One Calgarian has decided to turn his yard into his own “field of dreams” by building a skating rink.
Norm Price says he made the decision after his nephew complained city rinks are too crowded and too expensive.
“Once friends ... spread the word about how big the pond is, and how easy it's going to be to skate around without bumping into each other, I think it will do well,” Price explained. “It's kind of like my field of dreams.”
Price has flooded three acres of land — enough for three rinks. The rinks aren’t small either.
They’re located just east of Stoney Trail on 84th Street.
Price says people can use the rinks for free, which his co-worker Ehsan Azarakhsh does regularly.
“It seems quite fun. At this winter ... season, it's really a good opportunity for me to get in there and learn this,” Azarakhsh said.
Price plans to build lights, a concession stand and warming stations soon. He’s also hoping volunteers will step up and help with the maintenance.
