The company that employed three armoured car guards who were killed during an armed robbery in June says the shooting has not changed their hiring policies.
"We continue to follow the same policies," said Jean Taillon, president of G4S Canada. "We have done a full end-to-end review on our screening and training policies and we continue to look for better ways to improve that. But all in all, we've actually maintained the process and procedures that we're doing today."
Four guards working for G4S Security — Michelle Shegelski, Brian Ilesic, Eddie Rejano and Matthew Schuman — were shot while filling an ATM at HUB Mall on the University of Alberta campus on June 15.
Only Schuman survived.
A fifth guard, Travis Baumgartner, 21, was arrested at the U.S. border the next day and faces three counts of first-degree murder and one of attempted murder.
Taillon and his colleagues were in Edmonton Thursday to publicly thank city police and EMS workers who responded to the shooting and continue to support the victims' families.
Const. Ken Dack, one of the first on the scene that night, said it was a night he will never forget.
"It was emotional, it's emotional," he said. "It was a pretty intense night, to be sure."
That was echoed by paramedic supervisor Bruce Wade, also one of the first responders at the scene.
"It does bring our crews closer together," he said. "There's a bond that's unbelievable among the responders that evening."
