Toronto Argonauts Ricky Ray, left, outplayed Calgary Stampeders quarterback Kevin Glenn, says the CBC's Doug Dirks. (Paul Chiasson, Frank Gunn/Canadian Press)
Unfortunately, a painful lesson learned for me, and the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday in the 100th playing of the Grey Cup game — never bet against an experienced quarterback in the CFL title game.
Ricky Ray was masterful, while Kevin Glenn looked downright uncomfortable.
The Stampeders took too many bad penalties, and the Argos defence was terrific under the direction of former Calgary defensive coordinator Chris Jones.
Based on the way Doug Flutie tossed the football around during the pre-game warm up with former teammates Dave Dickenson and Dave Sapunjis, perhaps Flutie may have been a better choice to start at quarterback for Calgary.
Kudos to Jim Barker and the Argos for their convincing victory, and to the Toronto Grey Cup organizing committee for the excellent job they did in staging the game, and the festival.
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi lost his bet with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. Nenshi will be donating his weight in goods to the Toronto food bank.
I lost a bet with the host of the CBC Here and Now afternoon radio show in Toronto. Be sure to tune in Monday from 3-6 p.m. MT on the Homestretch when I refer to Toronto as the Official Centre of the Universe.
Beats sitting in rush hour traffic on the 401 on a daily basis!
