Calgarians hoping to take part in a big-budget Hollywood movie lined up for a casting call at Marlborough Mall on Saturday.

‘The Race To Save Nome’ starring Kurt Russell and Hilary Swank is set to start shooting on the Morley reserve in January.

Producers are looking for aboriginal and caucasian extras, both male and female, ages 8 to 70.

Leah Kennedy, who is on maternity leave, says she hopes to be one of the lucky ones chosen.

“I’ve always been interested in being an extra and here’s an opportunity because I’m not working my regular job and I’m off for the year. And my baby can also be interviewed and maybe get a job,” Kennedy said.

Gregory Davidson says he saw the casting-call ad in a local newspaper.

“I guess it’s on the bucket list to be in a movie… it’s as close as I’m going to get,” Davidson said.

The movie, which is based on a true story, is set in 1925 and chronicles the effort to bring vaccines to Nome, Alaska using sled dogs during a deadly diphtheria outbreak.

Candidates who are chosen for the film will be contacted next month.
