Doug Dirks, host of CBC's The Homestretch, brings his extensive background in covering sports to 100th Grey Cup coverage from Toronto. (CBC)It’s been quite a day for Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish, but he says he isn't ready to party just yet.
Cornish was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian on Thursday night in Toronto, but the young man from B.C. has his sights set on a bigger prize.
After the Stampeders practice on Thursday afternoon, Cornish says winning an MOP award will be a hollow victory if the Stampeders don't beat the Argos in Sunday's 100th Grey Cup.
Cornish thanked his two moms during his acceptance speech, just after they arrived safely from a trip to Israel. Cornish says his father died when he was young, leaving his widowed mother to raise five kids on her own.
The Stampeders star says he was only slightly fazed when his mom told him that she had met the love of her life.
"What's he like," Jon asked.
"It’s a she," his mom replied.
Cornish says he thought about it for about 15 seconds before replying, "That's cool."
He says he's proud of the woman who raised him for going back to school and completing a Masters degree in ethics.
She's now a practicing Anglican priest. Cornish says there's very few signs of homophobia in the Stampeders locker room, and that he's quick to speak out if any of his teammates say anything inappropriate.
The Stampeders award winner also says he's done a lot of growing up since he flashed his buttocks to the crowd during a game this season in Regina.
He says his goal is to learn something from every experience, good or bad.
Cornish is hoping for a positive finish to the CFL season on Sunday at the Rogers Centre.
