More than 2,800 crosses were put up on Memorial Drive over the weekend. (CBC)Volunteers spent the weekend putting up more than 2,800 crosses along Memorial Drive to remember Canada’s fallen soldiers.
The annual event raises awareness and support of the Calgarians that have fallen while serving Canada.
Organizer Laura Vanderkruk's father, George Bittman started the display four years ago.
“It's hard today because I'm thinking so much of my dad,” Vanderkruk said. “He was so passionate about this project. But it's incredible, I'm just so moved by all of the people that came out to help and those crosses look amazing.”
On Saturday, the Kinsmen Club of Calgary donated $10,000 to the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre.
The funds were raised through last year's Portrait of Honour Gala, with the Royal United Alberta Service Institute being a major contributor.
The crosses on Memorial Drive will be up until the day after Remembrance Day.
