An emergency room doctor and accident prevention specialist is urging Albertans to change their attitudes when it comes to kids riding all-terrain vehicles.

Doctor Louis Francescutti's plea comes after two children died in ATV accidents on the Thanksgiving weekend.

Francescutti — who is also the president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada says it's time the government made changes to the laws surrounding kids and quads.

“Injuries in Alberta are the leading cause of death for Albertans under the age of 45, but unfortunately the public sees these events as accidents, there's nothing you can do about it. Yet if these deaths were from meningitis you can rest assured we'd be doing a heck of a lot more than we're going to do as a result of these two needless deaths, “Francescutti said.

On Sunday, a nine-year-old boy died in Southern Alberta after the ATV he was riding on, rolled over.

RCMP say the boy was not wearing a helmet.

Yesterday, a four-year-old B.C. boy died near Nelson after the quad he was on flipped and landed on top of him and his step-dad.

Both the dad and the boy were wearing helmets.
