Dozens of people were square dancing to new songs Thursday night at the Winston Heights Mountview Community Hall. (CBC)You still get to circle left and weave the ring, but try square dancing to Who Let the Dogs Out.
Dozens of square dancers bowed to their partner and dosey doed Thursday night to the sound of pop music.
Square Dancing Calgary meets every Thursday, but dance caller Lorne Smith says he directs square dancers to modern music a few times a week.
Smith says modern music adds a lot to the traditional dancing.
“It's got a lot stronger beat and that's the main thing in any dance, you've got to have a good strong beat and it's a little bit more up tempo than some pieces,” he says.
Dancer James Chen says he loves dancing to modern music.
“Doesn't matter as long as we can dance we can exercise and socialize with people and that's a great thing — and it also helps to keep us healthy."
