A group of Calgary retirees have donated thousands of kilograms of locally grown vegetables to the city’s less fortunate.
Over the weekend, dozens of volunteers harvested all of the produce that will be donated to the Calgary Food Bank.
"We've turned over anywhere from 18 or 20 to 30 thousand pounds of vegetables into the food bank each year since 1999," said Laurence Murgatroyd, who helped get the project underway.
The project started 15 years ago when most of the gardeners retired from power company, TransAlta.
The Calgary Food Bank says the nutritional content of the hamper will make a big difference to families in need.
