A high-speed race on the QE II where two vehicles hit speeds of 214 kilometres per hour has led to criminal charges against a Calgary man.
The two cars were racing side by side near Innisfail, about 120 kilometres north of Calgary, just after midnight Saturday, said police.
An officer using radar recorded the speeds at more than 180km/h.
"It appears they were in a race, showing no regard for the safety of other drivers," said RCMP Const. Steve Molnar.
Moments later, a sheriff monitoring traffic further south clocked the pair at 214 km/h.
Police gave chase, but only one of the vehicles stopped, said Molnar.
A 21-year-old Calgary man is facing dangerous driving charges and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
His vehicle was seized, but police are still looking for the second driver and vehicle.
"Fortunately no one was hurt during this incident," said Molnar. "It could have ended tragically for anyone in or around those vehicles."
The QEII or Highway 2, is a busy corridor linking Edmonton and Calgary.
