Glitz and glamour marked the Red Carpet Opening Night Gala of the Calgary International Film Festival at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary Thursday night.

Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk hosted the event that featured Midnight's Children, directed by Canada's Deepa Mehta.

The film is based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by Salman Rushdie.

According to the CIFF website, the story centres on Saleem Sinai, who was born at midnight on the eve of India's independence from Britain.

As a child, Sinai discovers he has the power to communicate with the hundreds of children around the nation born that night, and that each of them possess a magical power.

The festival runs for 11 days and will screen more than 150 multi-genre films.
