The latest census numbers from Statistics Canada show the changing face of "couple-hood" in this country.

That includes a sharp rise in the number of same-sex couples nationally and here in Calgary.

CBC reporter Mary-Catherine McIntosh has that story.

While there was a jump in same-sex couple stats, an unexpectedly high number of same-sex marriages in places like the oilpatch left census-takers scratching their heads — until they realized many of the "couples" were only splitting the rent.

As a result, Statistics Canada said Wednesday it may have overestimated the number of same-sex married couples in parts of the country by as many as 4,500.
