Calgary businesses fear NHL lockout will cut profits

Some Calgary businesses fear they will take a hit in profits if the NHL season doesn’t go ahead.
The current collective bargaining agreement expires Saturday at midnight. The season is slated to start Oct. 11 with training camps due to open Sept. 21.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the season won’t start until a deal is reached.
The looming lockout has some businesses in Calgary worried, including the Melrose Cafe and Bar — which calls itself the "Home of the Red Mile.”
"Obviously hockey is a very big factor for us. We'd be lying to you if we said it wasn't,” said manager David Fida. “But we definitely have other aspects to the business that we are going to start to focus on."
Fida says they have shifted their attention to attracting customers with other sports like football.
At Jersey City, a sports store in the community of Westhills, employee Austin Shaw says customers haven’t even been talking about hockey.
“Without hockey in this area, in this community in Calgary, it's going to absolutely die,” Shaw said. “This store will struggle to do a thousand dollars in a day.”
Like Fida, Shaw says the store will focus on other sports like the NFL.
