The Insurance Bureau of Canada is reporting two hailstorms in southern Alberta this summer have resulted in more than $200 million in insured damages.
The first storm hit on July 26 and left a trail of damage from Cardston to Nanton.
The second and larger storm occurred in and around Calgary on Aug. 12 when large hail pelted the ground during a severe thunderstorm. There were reports of hail measuring six centimetres in diameter and some flooding.
“Alberta has had more than its share of damaging storms this summer,” said Heather Mack, IBC’s Alberta director of Government Relations.
The preliminary estimates are reported by Property Claim Services of Canada which tracks insured losses from catastrophic events in Canada.
Edmonton storm
IBC estimates the insured losses total climb to more than $300 million dollars when it includes a wind and rain storm in Edmonton in early July.
The region was left with another $200 milllion in damages from a storm last November as well.
“$500 million in losses in less than a year is staggering,” said Heather Mack on Wednesday.
