More than 7,000 volunteers were out today helping to collect donations for the Calgary Food Bank.
Larry Spackman with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says they are trying to set a new world record as well as fill empty shelves at the food bank.
“Our goal this year is to get over 500,000 pounds of food,” said Spackman.
“In 2008/09 we actually set a world record and got a little over 500,000 that time. This time we want to even do a little bit better than that and do a worldwide record for the amount of food gathered in one day and we think Calgrians are up to it.”
Several drop off and loading points were set up around the city.
Kathryn Sim with the food bank says two full tractor trailer loads were collected from just one of the drop off points at Westbrook Mall.
The citywide food drive is an annual event.
