The woman found dead in Dover Friday has been identified as Amy Sands, daughter of Okotoks town Coun. Ed Sands.

Sands said his daughter had struggled with drug addiction for years. He also said the death didn't come as a complete shock as she had been hanging with a dangerous crowd.

“She had an old boyfriend, a former boyfriend, who had just gotten out of prison and he had been calling her and perhaps threatening her — they had a very tumultuous relationship," said Sands.

Amy was interested in theatre and often worked as a dancer.

"To our darling Amy, may you find peace now. We will love you forever. Love, Mum and Dad. XOXOXO," wrote Debbie Sands, Amy's mother, on Facebook.

Her brother Mike Sands wrote that his sister would forever be in his heart.

“You were such an amazing person, the type that lit up every room and touched everyone you ever met. It was an honour having you in my life and I know you were there in spirit watchin' me shred for you tonight.”

Stephanie Rennie worked with Sands, who often went by AmiJane Marshall, and said the woman was always true to herself and never hesitated to lend a hand to someone in need.

"AmiJane didn’t just love life, she had a lust for it. She could get around any obstacle that stood in her way, and was constantly showing everyone what a outstanding and strong woman she really was," wrote Rennie in an email to the CBC.

Calgary police were called to a home in the southeast neighbourhood of Dover at 6:30 a.m. MT on Friday after neighbours reported hearing screaming and gunshots.

When police arrived the 27-year-old woman was dead.

Homicide detectives say the woman’s death is being treated as suspicious until an autopsy is performed next week.

Police are continuing to investigate and say they are interviewing witnesses. No suspects have been named.
