A preliminary hearing started in Grande Prairie on Tuesday for the man accused of causing a crash that killed four high school football players, and critically injured a fifth.

Brenden Holubowich was 21 last October when RCMP say he was behind the wheel of a pickup truck that collided with a car carrying the teens.

Matthew Deller, 16, Vincent Stover, 16, Walter Borden-Wilkins, 15, and Tanner Hildebrand, 15, were killed.

Zach Judd survived, but spent 11 days in a coma. He is still recovering from a brain injury and was undergoing rehab.

Holubowich faces 11 charges, including four counts of impaired driving causing death and one count of failing to remain at the scene.

Family members attended the hearing Tuesday, which is scheduled to take place until the end of the week.
