RCMP charged a 57-year-old woman with aggravated assault following a dog attack in Sundre, Alta., over the weekend.
RCMP say two “pitbull-type dogs” attacked a 26-year-old Calgary woman just before 2 a.m. MT when she was visiting a mobile home in the area on Saturday.
She suffered critical injuries to her arms and face and was first taken to the local hospital before being flown to the Foothills Hospital, where she is expected to recover.
"While doing our very best in advancing this investigation, we are also very cognizant of how this incident has impacted the victim, her family, and emergency workers attending the scene", said Cpl. Ryan Hodge, Sundre RCMP's acting detachment commander.
"Even for a seasoned professional, this was a very traumatic scene".
Hodge said one dog was put down at the scene because it acted aggressively towards RCMP officers who responded to the scene. The other was successfully sedated and captured, and is in quarantine.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Rita Phillip, who RCMP say fled the scene and has not been found.
Police believe she is not a threat to public safety at this time.
Sundre is about 115 kilometres northwest of Calgary.
