RCMP say an ultra-lite plane crashed near Indus, east of Calgary, around 12:30 p.m. MT Thursday.
STARS air ambulance tranported the pilot to Foothills Hospital.
STARS spokesman Cam Heke says the man is 59-years-old and is in potentially life-threatening, but stable condition.
Police say the plane went down shortly after taking off.
Witnesses found the wreckage of the ultra-light in a field two kilometers away from the airport.
Strathmore RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
Indus is a 15-minute drive from southeast Calgary.
