A Calgary woman says developers in a hurry are destroying too many trees in the inner city.
Kara Hallett, of the Parkdale Tree Huggers, says 14 mature trees were ripped out of just one development alone in her northwest neighbourhood, including a 60-year-old elm.
Hallet says there is little the community can do because developers on private land don't have to make their plans public.
"And so one day the house is knocked down, the trees are knocked down and we have had no information to try and fight that."
Ward 9 Ald. Gian-Carlo Carra says it may be time to talk about adopting rules for trees on private property, but there may also be times when it's necessary to take a tree down.
"I think we have to understand that it's part of a life cycle too and sometimes losing a tree that's at the end of its lifespan to put in a bunch of trees is a good way to go," said Carra on Thursday.
The head of the city's planning department is meeting with community representatives in October to talk about all the trees that are being chopped down.
