The pilot of an ultralight plane was lucky to escape a crash near the Ponoka Airport shortly after taking off.

The aircraft came down in a farmer's field about 100 metres from the south end of the runway at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The pilot, a 57-year-old Red Deer man, walked away from the crash, but was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the accident was likely caused by mechanical failure, however the exact cause will be determined by Transport Canada.
