The former president of Mount Royal University's student union pleaded guilty to robbery and other charges in a Calgary courtroom Wednesday morning.
Meghan Darcy Melnyk, 28, was charged with robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon and committing an indictable offence while disguised.
"I really regret what I did, for the people I hurt and what happened as a result," she said outside court after it adjourned. "Right now this is about me taking accountability, seeking help so that I can go and be a productive member of society again."
Melnyk said she had a problem with gambling and lost control, but is currently getting help — which includes counselling and support groups.
"I lost control of myself and who I was," she said, adding she is deeply ashamed.
Police had arrested Melnyk after the Servus Credit Union on 68th Avenue S.E. was robbed back in February.
At the time, investigators had said a woman entered the bank and gave a teller a note demanding money and indicating she had a weapon. The teller turned over an undisclosed amount of cash and the woman left.
A police helicopter was used to help find Melnyk, who was then arrested alone.
There were also outstanding warrants against her for fraud, uttering forged documents and breach of probation.
Court documents show Melnyk had been sentenced to probation for possession of a stolen SUV three years ago. She was also fined after pleading guilty to falsely applying for a social insurance number
Melnyk had resigned as the Mount Royal Students' Association president in January.
Her sentencing date will be set Aug. 3.
