One person was taken to hospital Tuesday morning after the Trico Centre in southwest Calgary was evacuated because of a chlorine leak.

West District Fire Chief Don Howard says staff were doing routine maintenance around 6 a.m. MT when they noticed the leak at the recreation centre located on the 1100 block of Bonaventure Drive S.E.

"They were draining out their jacuzzi tub that's in there, the hot tub," he said. "They started getting high chlorine readings, there is chlorine mixed in with the pools to start with."

While no members of the public were in the building, fire crews quickly took six employees from the building — bringing one man to hospital for observation.

Fire crews ventilated the facility to help restore acceptable safety standards of chlorine for staff and patrons.
