Firefighters and equipment outside the province are on the way to northern Alberta as crews continue to battle 17 out-of-control wildfires.

“Over the next few days we are getting an additional 33 firefighters and specialists in from the Yukon, Alaska, New Brunswick and Ontario,” Wildfire Information Officer Heather Hawkins told CBC News in an email Sunday.

“We have also had additional aircraft and equipment sent from the Yukon, Alaska, and Ontario.”

There are currently 54 fire burning in the province,the largest of which is the out-of-control blaze burning outside Zama City, 140 km north of High Level. As of Sunday, the fire was estimated at over 117,000 hectares in size.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for Zama City earlier this week and people have been moved to High Level.

Hawkins says while rain and cooler temperatures early next week are expected to help the situation, “there is still a long way to go get them completely extinguished.”
