Calgary police perform a grid search of the restaurant parking lot Sunday. (CBC)Two Calgary men are in life-threatening condition after a quadruple shooting at a northeast Vietnamese restaurant that left one person dead.
At least one gunman opened fire at Basil Ultimate Pho and Fine Vietnamese Cuisine just after 2 a.m. Sunday, hitting four people.
All four victims — the man who died, the two men in hospital and a woman who received minor injuries — are in their 30s and 40s.
While police say the shooting was targeted, they have not said it's gang-related. Police have, however, said their investigation will draw on experience from a similar shooting — the 2009 New Year's Day triple murder at the Bolsa Vietnamese Restaurant.
Calgary police are investigating an early morning shooting at Basil Ultimate Pho and Fine Vietnamese Cuisine in the city's northeast. (Meghan Grant/CBC)Raj Persad, who owns a liquor store next to the restaurant, said he's disturbed that the shooting happened so close.
"I didn't think something like that can happen next door because those people are such nice people, their food is so good, everything is good with them," said Persad.
"Anytime you need some help or something like that they are always there to help. I can't say anything bad, they are very nice people."
Police Duty Insp. Craig Skelton said this type of violence affects all Calgarians.
“We should all be concerned, this is our community, we want to have a safe community – and we work very hard to have a safe community — so, this does affect us all," said Skelton.
Basil is located in the Horizon Industrial Park, next to the community of Whitehorn.
