The sometimes controversial Bow River Flow on Memorial Drive has been cancelled.

Instead, it is being incorporated into other festivals, including Canada Day.

The event which celebrated the Bow River shut down parts of the major thoroughfare for one day in August for the last three years to encourage people to use other modes of transportation.

Organizers have now added the event to Open Streets Calgary which is comprised of a group of cyclists and local institutions.

“We have been given the opportunity to help program some of this city's biggest festivals. It's an opportunity we couldn't pass up,” said Erin McFarlane, 2011 Bow River Flow Coordinator.

He said that on July 1, parts of Riverfront Drive will be shut down for a street festival.

“We're thrilled that the 2012 Canada Day celebrations will feature a car-free Riverfront Drive, expanding on the Bow River Flow. This builds on the city's commitment to healthier transportation and vibrant neighbourhoods; new bike pathways and new staff to support sustainable transportation.”
