Redford denies knowledge of Mar's reappointment

Progressive Conservative Leader Alison Redford is refusing to comment on reports that her former rival Gary Mar has been reinstated as Alberta's Envoy to Hong Kong.
"I have been clear from the beginning of this process that I would play no role in the investigation," she said in a press release Thursday morning.
"I have not played any role after referring it to the civil service to be dealt with nor was I informed of the decision," she said.
Redford suspended Mar from his job as the province's Asian envoy and asked the ethics commissioner to investigate an event held to pay off Mar's debt accrued during his failed leadership bid.
The event at the Edmonton Petroleum Club on Mar. 1 was to go towards the $262,000 in debts.
One version of the invitation for the event referred to Mar's government position and implied that ticket-holders would learn how to do business in Hong Kong.
More than 100 supporters reportedly paid $400 a plate to hear Mar speak about trade opportunities in Asia at the event. A trip to Hong Kong, where Mar is based, was also auctioned off for $20,000.
Mar has said he is innocent and would not knowingly leverage his job as trade envoy to raise funds to pay private debts.
