Many Canadians can expect shrinking home-heating bills, now that natural gas prices have fallen to their lowest level in more than 10 years.

Calgary energy consultant Cameron Gingrich says household natural gas bills, unless home owners have a long-term contract that locks them in to a price.

Natural gas futures were below US $2 per 1,000 cubic feet on Thursday at the New York Mercantile Exchange — about half what it was a year ago.

Gingrich says consumers will get savings on the cost of gas they buy but the cost of transporting and distributing the natural gas will remain steady.

He says Alberta pays a bit less for the fuel because it's closer to the source, whereas other markets have added transportation costs.
