Meghan Melnyk, the former student association president at Mount Royal University who is accused of robbing a bank, was granted bail Wednesday.

The judge issued a bail of a $6,000 cash deposit or an agreement to pay $12,000 if conditions of her bail are broken. Melnyk’s mother Karen was willing to be responsible for the $12,000.

Melnyk appeared via video link, standing quietly as lawyer Derek Lovett argued for her release.

As part of her bail conditions, Melnyk was banned from any establishment with video lottery terminals.

The 27-year-old must also live with her aunt in Didsbury, and is required to check in with RCMP once a week.

She was ordered to stay away from Mount Royal University and not take part in any of her previous activities on campus.

Melnyk is charged with robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon and committing an indictable offence while disguised.

She was arrested after the Servus Credit Union on 68th Avenue S.E. was robbed last week.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 16.

Calgary police are also investigating a complaint of "financial anomalies" they received from the Mount Royal students’ association involving Melnyk.
