Calgary police confirmed Friday they have received a complaint from the Mount Royal students’ association involving Meghan Melnyk, the former president of the group who was charged with robbery this week.

The students' council announced Friday it had completed a preliminary investigation into "financial anomalies" uncovered earlier in the academic year during a periodic review of elected student leader performance.

"Our preliminary investigation suggests that only one person acting alone was responsible for the anomalies, but the matter has now been reported to other authorities for further investigation," said students' association VP External Michelle Dennis in a release.

The student group said it regularly reviews ways to "improve our controls in order to ensure students’ interests are protected." The periodic review is a direct result of a revised protocol implemented last year.

Melnyk, who stepped down as a student leader in January, also made her first appearance via video link in court Friday.

She is charged with a number of offences in relation to a bank robbery. The 27-year-old was wearing a grey sweater and didn't say a word during the court proceedings.

Melnyk is charged with robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon and committing an indictable offence while disguised.

Arrest made Wednesday

She was arrested after the Servus Credit Union on 68th Avenue S.E. was robbed Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say a woman who said she had a weapon entered the bank and gave a teller a note demanding money. The woman fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

In court Friday, Melnyk's lawyer Derek Lovett asked the judge to have the matter put over to next Wednesday. The judge agreed and Melnyk will remain in police custody until then.

This isn't Melnyk's first brush with the law. Police say there were outstanding warrants against her for fraud, uttering forged documents and breach of probation.

Court documents also show Melnyk was sentenced to probation for possession of a stolen SUV three years ago. She was also fined after pleading guilty to falsely applying for a social insurance number.

A few of Melnyk's friends were in court Friday, but they did not want to talk to the media.
