The family of a baby boy who was mauled to death by a pet husky has had the dog put down. (Jessica Burtnick)The Airdrie, Alta., family whose newborn was killed by their Siberian husky have put the dog down.
Emergency crews were called to a house in the city's Kingsland area after the husky attacked the baby on the morning of Feb. 15.
The two-day-old boy was rushed to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, but died around 10:30 p.m. MT.
The Fradette family released a statement saying they made the decision to euthanize the family pet, and it was done under the supervision of a qualified vet earlier on Thursday.
They're still requesting privacy while they continue their healing process.
The family owns a number of Siberian huskies and operates a supply business for dogsledders. They also participate in dog races in both Alberta and B.C.
The family told police that they never had issues with the dog in the past. They also have a two-year-old child and had never seen any aggression before.
“The death of our son was an unthinkable, tragic accident,” the Fradettes said in a previously released statement.
The husky was held in quarantine in Calgary until its fate was decided. The family had also received word from animal lovers across the country looking to adopt the pet husky.
At least a dozen requests have come in, said Darryl Poburan with municipal enforcement for the city of Airdrie.
The family said all of their dogs have gone through numerous obedience training classes and the family will never know why their pet attacked the baby.
The Fradettes also say they had attended a Calgary Humane Society "Old Pet, New Baby" seminar.
Police did not lay any criminal charges in the incident.
The family has set up a memorial donation page to raise funds for the Alberta Children's Hospital intensive care unit.
