Homicide detectives were on scene in Airdrie, Alta., Saturday after police found a woman's body in a home in the city's southwest.

On the quiet street in the new subdivision of Bayside, yellow police tape surrounded the home where Andrea Conroy, a single mother in her 30s, was found dead Friday afternoon.

According to neighbours, her seven-year-old child is now in the care of maternal grandparents. Police believe the child was not at home at the time of the killing.

Angel Root lives down the street and said her daughter was a friend of the victim’s child.

She says the two moved to Airdrie from Calgary about a year ago, following their daycare provider there.

“Quite shocked actually, because they were so quiet when we went to see them at the bowling alley for her daughter's birthday party they just seemed so nice and sincere,” she said. “I'm just so surprised someone would do something like this to her.”

Another neighbour noticed the young mother's newspapers have been piling up since Wednesday.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Suspect sought

On the east side of the QE2 highway, there is more yellow tape at another home on Big Hill Way.

A search warrant was executed at the Big Springs-area home as part of the homicide investigation, but no one was in the residence at the time.

Neighbours say the man who lives there is an award-winning bodybuilder named Rick Doucette — a man in his 40s who owned a personal training business in the city.

Police won't release any information on their suspect, and only say the victim was targeted.
